Codes & Letters shows no advertising. It measures how its pages are read with two tools: Google Analytics 4, which uses cookies, and Cloudflare Web Analytics, which does not. This page explains what each one collects, when it runs and how to refuse it.

In brief

  • No ads. The site carries no advertising and no advertising code.
  • Google Analytics 4 uses cookies to count visits. For readers in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, it does not load at all until Accept is pressed, and after Reject it never loads.
  • Cloudflare Web Analytics uses no cookies and runs for every reader in every region. The Accept and Reject buttons do not control it; a content blocker can.

Google Analytics 4

What it collects. Google Analytics 4 is a Google service for counting visits. On this site it records which pages are opened and for how long, scrolling, clicks on links to other sites and file downloads. It also records the page you came from, your browser and type of device, and an approximate location worked out from your connection.

Once loaded, Google Analytics stores first-party cookies in your browser, _ga and one whose name begins _ga_, so that it can tell a returning browser from a new one. Google lists the cookies it uses at policies.google.com/technologies/cookies.

How it is set up. The site tells Google Analytics that storage for advertising, sending user data for advertising and ad personalization are all refused. Google signals is turned off, the account's data-sharing settings are turned off, and event data is kept for 14 months. Google explains how it uses information from sites that use its services at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.

When it loads. That depends on where the connection comes from. Unless a choice is already saved, each page asks Cloudflare, the network that delivers the site, which country the connection is in. The answer stays in your browser and is used only for this decision.

  • European Economic Area, United Kingdom and Switzerland, plus territories covered by the same or equivalent rules (the French overseas departments, Saint Martin, the Åland Islands, Gibraltar, Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man): a notice appears with Accept and Reject buttons. Until you press Accept, Google Analytics is not loaded at all, nothing is sent to Google and no Analytics cookie is set. If you press Reject, it does not load on that browser.
  • Unknown location. If the country cannot be determined, or the check fails, the same notice appears under the same rules.
  • Everywhere else, including the United States: Google Analytics loads when the page opens, without a notice. It can still be turned off, as described below.

Changing your choice. The choice is saved in your browser's local storage, not in a cookie, and it is not sent to the site. To change it, use the link in the page footer that reopens the analytics notice. It works in every region. If Google Analytics is already running on the page, choosing Reject reloads the page without it, and it stays off from then on.

Rejecting does not remove Analytics cookies already in your browser. Your browser's settings for codesandletters.com can delete them, and clearing the site's data there also clears your saved choice. Google also offers a browser add-on that stops Google Analytics on all sites: tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.

Cloudflare Web Analytics

Cloudflare delivers every page of the site and inserts its Web Analytics beacon, beacon.min.js from static.cloudflareinsights.com. The beacon reports page views and how quickly pages load to an address on this site, /cdn-cgi/rum. It sets no cookies and uses no local storage, and Cloudflare states that it does not fingerprint visitors. It runs for every reader in every region, and the analytics notice does not control it.

To block it, add static.cloudflareinsights.com to the block list of a content blocker; pages work the same without it. As the network that delivers the site, Cloudflare also handles the IP address of each request in order to deliver pages and filter abusive traffic. Cloudflare's privacy policy is at cloudflare.com/privacypolicy.

Nothing else

Apart from these two tools, the pages load no tracking code. Fonts are served from codesandletters.com itself rather than from a font service, and there are no social media embeds.

Advertising

There are no ads on the site. If that changes, this page will be updated first, to name the ad provider, explain how it and other companies, including Google, use cookies to show ads based on earlier visits, and say how to opt out.
