Messages that help
- Corrections. Give the page address, quote the sentence or number that is wrong and say what it should be. Include a source if you can; a primary source, such as the original document, the dataset or the font file, is the most useful kind.
- Better sources. A published history, a collection page or a database entry that is older, more direct or more complete than the one a page cites.
- Image credits and licenses. If you hold the rights to an image on the site and its credit is wrong, or its use goes beyond its license, name the image and the page. A confirmed problem is fixed or the image is taken down, and the change is logged.
Corrections that hold up are dated and logged on the corrected page and in the correction history. How claims are checked in the first place: About Codes & Letters.
Requests the site does not take on
Messages asking for the following fall outside what Codes & Letters does:
- Decoding a ciphertext or breaking a cipher that you send.
- Identifying writing, symbols or markings on an object or in a photo of your own.
- Recommending fonts, or helping to find, buy or download one.
- Doing language or linguistics homework or assignments.
- Advice on computer security, passwords or encryption in use today, including whether a method or an app is safe.
